Your Health and the Greenbelt

The Greenbelt is safe for recreational use

An extensive amount of work has been completed at the Greenbelt and the adjacent Overlanders Community. Extensive sampling and analysis of surface soil was conducted on the Greenbelt and many of the neighbouring backyards. In addition, soil vapour assessments were completed on the Greenbelt and adjacent Overlanders Community. A site-specific risk assessment, including an updated human health risk assessment and ecological risk assessment were completed and submitted to AEP and approved by AEP and Alberta’s Office of the Chief Scientist, which is discussed further below.

SITE-SPECIFIC RISK ASSESSMENT INDICATES NO THREAT TO HUMAN HEALTH

Using an approach that is consistent with provincial and federal guidelines, the data that came out of the extensive site investigations were used by Intrinsik, an independent environmental health sciences firm, to assess the potential health risks to the Overlanders residents and people who use the Greenbelt for recreational reasons.

The findings of the Intrinsik site-specific risk assessment report showed that the measured concentrations on the Greenbelt and Overlanders Community do not pose a threat to the health of the residents or users of the Greenbelt. These findings are consistent with the conclusions drawn in previous independent health risk assessments that were conducted at the site.

The report was reviewed by AEP and Alberta’s Office of the Chief Scientist. In May 2020, Domtar received notification from AEP that both the AEP and Chief Scientist had accepted the findings of the site-specific risk assessment.
